December 3, 2024

April 7 was our 43rd wedding anniversary. After 43 years, the traditional gift is not paper or silver or gold. It’s using the day to justify the money we just spent at the semi-local FLGS.

On Monday, we traveled to Buffalo to see our son and granddaughter and to do a little shopping. One of the stores we hit was the very nice Dragon Snack Games.

My original idea was to go in for a couple of minutes, check out what they might have that wasn’t readily available in our city and to see if they had a clearance section.

Karen had a different idea (or so it would seem). She started picking up games and saying “This looks good!” all over the store, sometimes ones that were on my shortlist of games I NEED (don’t we actually need them all?) like The Quacks of Quedlinburg and a few that I wasn’t that familiar with.

We ended up walking out with four games (yes, I know there are five there…more on that in a minute).

Along with the previously mentioned Quacks, we also bought Juicy FruitsGlasgow and Tem-Purr-A. All four were picked out by Karen and I wasn’t arguing because her choices were really good and fit the style and weight of gaming that we enjoy.

Except for the smallest one, Tem-purr-a. I checked the BGG listing for it and there were a few good comments but my favorite was “Don’t judge me. I bought this for the card art. The cat diving at the sushi makes me chuckle every time I see it.” In essence, it appears to be a variant on UNO but with an increase in the laugh factor and, to be honest, that’s not a bad thing. Everything we play can’t be brain burning and tense. Sometimes you just have to get a group of people together for some mindless fun.

…and cute cat cards.

Oh, and that fifth game in the picture, Villagers, I had previously bought on-line where it was on-sale. It just so happened to be delivered on the same day as our store haul.

So that leaves us with a drained wallet and the excuse that we bought all those games to celebrate our anniversary. Thursday will, no doubt, start with a nice hike (weather permitting) and a few new games.

That’s how you do it after 43 years. Write that down for future reference.
